Long Island is an island located in southeastern New York, United States, just east of Manhattan. Stretching northeast into the Atlantic Ocean, Long Island contains four counties, two of which are boroughs (Queens and Brooklyn) of New York City, and two of which (Nassau and Suffolk) are mainly suburban. Numerous bridges and tunnels through Brooklyn and Queens connect Long Island to the three other boroughs of New York City. | Fire Island, NY
Fire Island is both the name of an island and the name of a census-designated place (CDP).
The island is one of Long Island's south shore outer barrier islands, approximately 31 miles (50 km) long and varying between approximately 0.1 mile (160 m) to 0.25 mile (400 m) wide. Fire Island passes through southern Suffolk County, New York, and is southeast of Long Island separated from the main land by the Great South Bay in the U.S. state of New York, running approximately SW to NE. Huntington Bay, New York
If you can locate the stacks of the Long Island Power Authority on the North Shore of Long Island, you are close by and need to visit Huntington Village and Huntington Bay. Boaters enjoy the Long Island Sound for it’s depth and temperatures which allow you to swim from June to October. This area is well protected and offer roped off areas with lifeguards for safety. Southold, New York
Located at the far end of Long Island, New York’s North Shore, experience a beautiful relaxing ride through an area resembling Long Island decades past. Drive through and sample numerous famous vineyards and take in the beauty of period homes. Pack a picnic lunch or dinner enjoy it at the Orient Beach State Park – located almost at the very tip of the North Shore. Inside the park, look for the Orient Long Beach Bar Light – commonly known to the locals as the Bug Lighthouse. Hike a nature trail, rent a bicycle, let the children play on the park playground. Hudson River, New York
For anyone that missed the Great River Day Flotilla in June, saluting Henry Hudson and the crew of the Half Moon, that sailed up the Hudson to what is almost Albany 400 years ago, the celebration is still taking place with fun events for all.
